These materials are used in the UCLA Extension and other classes. They are available free for download. Please include a reference to http://www.ArchiveBuilders.com if you make reference to these materials or distribute them. The papers are updated from time to time. Please access the current version, available here, when making copies.
Almost all of the course materials have been updated and three new white papers have been added. The course slides have also been added, so all of the course materials are now available on the website. (Please see update listing page for details.) All the materials can be downloaded as a single PDF file and printed with one command. Individual pages or white papers can be printed separately.
Software download cautionary statement (Adobe PDF format):
The documents are in a PDF (Portable Document Format) file. They are compressed to about one quarter of their uncompressed Microsoft Office 2000 size. If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat software to read the PDF, it is at http://www.Adobe.com (click on the 1 inch wide button (below) that says "Get Acrobat Reader"). Please be sure that you have someone in mind who could help you if you have a problem when you install the Acrobat software. If you can forward the PDF file over a LAN to the person you think might be able to help you, that person may prefer to print the files and send you back the documents instead of installing Acrobat on your system.
If you experience difficulties with downloading the materials, please check here in a few days or weeks to see if we have fixed the problem you experienced. We will post fixes as we discover problems.
Three new white papers have been added, most of the white papers have been updated, the class slides have been added, and a set of raster scanned illustrations have been added. (The slides have not been updated after they were used in the Fall 1999 UCLA Extension class. However, they are several updates newer than the slides that are on the server in Singapore.)
The entire set of class materials is now a single Adobe PDF file of 228 pages (2.8 MegaBytes). One click to download; one more click to print all the materials. The PDF format allows a much more efficient, and easier to read format than HTML, so you will only get 114 pages of easy to read output. All of the documents available at the site are designed to be printed as a single document (book) on two sided pages. The documents can also be printed individually or as single pages. Because all the course materials are in a single PDF file, you can do a full text search on all the materials. Also, because the materials are in PDF, you do not need Microsoft Office 2000 to view the materials; all you need is a free PDF viewer that you can download from Adobe Systems. (Please see above.)
Adobe Acrobat is not yet fully compatible with Office 2000 and Windows 98 Second Edition. Possible fixes are:

All of the course materials are also available in Microsoft Office 2000 format. It is supposed to be backward compatible, but there are some issues.
Software download cautionary statement (WinZip format):
The files are in a compressed WinZip file. They are compressed to about one quarter of their uncompressed size. If you do not have the WinZip software, it is at http://www.WinZip.com. (click on the 1 inch square button (below) that says "WinZip Now") Please be sure that you have someone in mind who could help you if you have a problem when you install the WinZip software. If you can forward the compressed WinZip file over a LAN to the person you think might be able to help you, that person may prefer to uncompress the files and send you back the uncompressed files instead of installing WinZip on your system.
Software download cautionary statement (Microsoft Office format documents):
These files are not warranted to not have computer viruses. Also, success in using Microsoft Office format files from this web site may make it more likely that you may use Microsoft Office format documents from other web sites. In all cases, it is possible that Microsoft Office format documents may include computer viruses.
Click here for all white papers in one .zip file (Microsoft Office format, compressed).
If you have a 1 MegaByte limit on messages, you can download the file without the raster scanned illustrations.
Click here for the class materials without the raster scanned illustrations (Microsoft Office format, compressed) (800 KiloBytes.)
Then you can download the raster scanned illustrations.
Click here for the raster scanned illustrations (Microsoft Office format, compressed) (1 MegaByte.)
We have left the old HTML versions of the class materials up on the Internet so that the search engines can find our site. We will eventually convert all the materials to XML, and the search engines will be able to index the current versions of the class materials.
