Document Imaging and Document Management Course

The week after the class, we had an IT (Information Technology) walk through. I understood what they said about document management and I knew where they were coming from when they talked about document management. The course covered the latest technology that IT was speaking about during the walkthrough. For example: Foveon http://www.Foveon.com and the use of digital copiers for input/output for document management. From the class, I said that digital copiers were best when scanning copies of the originals, and copies of originals is what we have in our court. I suggested using DVDs and the IT staff said that they had already started looking into DVDs. The IT staff talked about metadata and data, and I was able to contribute to their discussion based on what I had learned in class. I was able to add that digital signatures no longer had a guarantee of security under the law http://www.house.gov/rules/s761cr_h3.pdf and that some type of digital seal would be required for us to be able to certify our digital copies in the same way that we certify our paper copies of court records today.
Most of the short seminars have very little you can take back to work and use. This class had a lot of information I found immediately useful on the job. It had many suggestions I have been able to use right away.
The thing I like most about the class was that it was packed with useful information.
The presentation style was good. The material was well presented and simplified in a way that really helped me to understand the information and the issues.
I plan to purchase several of the books displayed in the class.
Just the information in the course was very useful for my job.
I was excited to tell my son about the technology that would replace computers and all existing technology. Unfortunately, he already knew about nanotechnology. http://www.foresight.org

The instructor made me think about the different possibilities and directions that a project might go in ~ and to question and analyze everything. The handout is world class, there is so much information in it that you will be overwhelmed (in a good way). You can take a look at the handout, or print it, at http://www.archivebuilders.com/whitepapers/22922v001p.pdf I am using the handout as one of my key reference sources for my contributions to our document management project committee. If you can make the class, I highly recommend it, and it's inexpensive!
I particularly remember the explanation of how RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) works with the parity disk and the ability to recreate the bits on a failed disk (without having to actually read the failed disk) and how the ECC (Error Correcting Code) in RAID relates to error recovery for the 50 thousand to 500 thousand bad bits on every CD and 500 thousand to 5 million bad bits on every DVD.
I found it useful to become familiar with the tradeoffs for shifting costs between indexing and searching: inexpensive indexing increases searching costs, high quality (and high cost) indexing makes searching easier and reduces searching costs.
It was also useful to learn that OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is better for full text indexing than it is for entering precise values into index fields.

A very comprehensive course on document management with a lot of support materials. The instructor covered a lot in a short period, balancing some highly technical information with the anecdotal, human elements of data management. Good visual support also made it interesting. There were many aspects to every part of the presentation. The textbook shows the breadth of the course, making this course very valuable for people who do data archiving or who are concerned about handling data.

I remember lots of things about the class.
I still think about the class after a month.
It was very interesting.
The books displayed in the class collation were really good and gave me a lot to think about.
I really liked the virtual reality (VR) model for document indexing and seeing the VR video tour showing how the documents of the City of Los Angeles could be indexed.
Our tour covered many places including an Internet portal, active records, 180 thousand boxes of inactive records, and an archive.
I was exposed to a lot of issues for the first time. These were issues in areas I do not work in, but that are important.
We were really exposed to the document management continuum, from the study of pixels to the process of creating, storing, and preventing the deterioration of documents.
I learned about resolutions for document display, printing, and scanning.
I learned about issues surrounding CDs and DVDs.
I liked moving from the relational model to object oriented documents, GIS, and VR.
There were lots of little touches that provided a connection to the material.
One of the greatest strengths of the class is its broad scope.
I was happy to hear that the book is a work-in-progress, and gets updated over time. It is a very rich source of information.
I enjoyed talking with and learning with from people from all over the country.
I recommend the class to anyone interested in document management and digital imaging.

Steve Gilheany is perhaps one of the best instructors I have ever had the privilege to study with ..almost encyclopedic in his knowledge of the subject, extremely well organized and entertaining to boot!
The class was rigorous, but not fatal, and it included a visit to the City Engineer's Office and tours of both the active , as well as the archived, records of the City of Los Angeles. The GIS systems (Geographic Information Systems) were of particular interest to me, a "wannabe geologist".
The class had a wonderful cross-section of people and interests and we were actually able to get to know each other through the 3 days of instruction, meals and tours.
The materials Mr. Gilheany had on display and available for perusal were voluminous, timely and varied: journals, books, maps, proceedings, newsletters, newspapers, posters, digital images and much much more.
Each class member received a bound volume of Mr. Gilheany's Power Point Presentation and all of it's supporting materials - which have already proved invaluable.
I can recommend this course, and especially this instructor, to any and all who have even a passing interest in the digital world, as well as to those who are seeking a comprehensive and in-depth view of the world of digital documents today, and those in the future.

I gave a presentation the Monday morning after attending the your three day class. The presentation was to our department heads and was scheduled for 15 minutes and went one hour. It went very well I think. I could not have done it without some of the things I got out of your class. For that, you get a "Job Well Done" thank you from another satisfied student.
