These materials are used in the document management class taught by Archive Builders. They are available free for download. Please include a reference to http://www.archivebuilders.com/ if you make reference to these materials or distribute them. The papers are updated from time to time. Please access the current version, available here, when making copies.
All of the documents available at the site are designed to be printed as a single document (book) on two sided pages. The documents can also be printed individually or as single pages. Because all the course materials are also available in a single PDF file, you can do a full text search on all the materials. Also, because the materials are in PDF, you do not need Microsoft Office 2000 to view the materials; all you need is a free PDF viewer that you can download from Adobe Systems. (Please see below.)
Most of the articles are available in three formats. (The HTML formatted version of some of the articles have not been completed yet. The HTML formats are currently being updated.) Click here for a download cautionary statement on the PDF format. Click here for a download cautionary statement on the Microsoft Word format (MS Word). Click here for a download cautionary note on WinZip which is used for the compilations listed at the end. Click here for a download cautionary note on file sizes over 1 or 2 MegaBytes.
If you click on the HTML format, the article will appear on your screen as a normal web page. The PDF and Microsoft Word formats are included because they print as far fewer pages and because you can modify the Microsoft Office format versions so that they can be republished in newsletters or added to slide presentations.

If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat software to read the PDF, it is at http://www.adobe.com/ (click on the 1 inch wide button (below) that says "Get Acrobat Reader"). Please be sure that you have someone in mind who could help you if you have a problem when you install the Acrobat software. If you can forward the PDF file over a LAN to the person you think might be able to help you, that person may prefer to print the files and send you back the documents instead of installing Acrobat on your system.
If you experience difficulties with downloading the materials, please check here in a few days or weeks to see if we have fixed the problem you experienced. We will post fixes as we discover problems.
All of the documents available at the site are designed to be printed as a single document (book) on two sided pages. The documents can also be printed individually or as single pages. Because all the course materials are in a single PDF file, you can do a full text search on all the materials. Also, because the materials are in PDF, you do not need Microsoft Office 2000 to view the materials; all you need is a free PDF viewer that you can download from Adobe Systems. (Please see above.)
Adobe Acrobat is not yet fully compatible with Office 2000 and Windows 98 Second Edition. Possible fixes are:
You may also have to add memory to your printer to avoid printer overruns. In many cases, restarting printing with a page two pages beyond the last successful page printed will work. You can download and print the individual document you may have had trouble printing. You can also use the print screen key to capture a difficult page from the screen. A control V will paste the print screen into Microsoft Word.
Fix 001:
If your connection times out while printing this book from the Internet, try downloading the file and then printing it. Do not use the Internet Explorer task bar to do a copy and paste as this may result in the document format being converted to HTML. Use Adobe Acrobat to copy the file. You can also try the download to disk option. You can then open the book from the folder you downloaded the book to.
Fix 002:
If at all possible, please ask your systems people for assistance. Many people have successfully downloaded PDF files from this site. It is very likely that your problem is from a system misconfiguration, incompatible software versions, or a misunderstanding of how to copy and/or print the files. Most problems are easily solved by people who maintain PCs.
Fix 003:
See file size download cautionary note.
Viewing and printing all documents in Microsoft Office 2000 (Word and PowerPoint) format. All of the course materials are also available in Microsoft Office 2000 format. Microsoft Office 2000 is supposed to be backward compatible, but there are some issues.
These files are not warranted to not have computer viruses. Also, success in using Microsoft Office format files from this web site may make it more likely that you may use Microsoft Office format documents from other web sites. In all cases, it is possible that Microsoft Office format documents may include computer viruses.
For Microsoft Office documents in the WinZip compressed format, please see also the WinZip download cautionary statement. (See below)
The files are in a compressed WinZip file. They are compressed to about one quarter of their uncompressed size. If you do not have the WinZip software, it is at http://www.WinZip.com. (click on the 1 inch square button (below) that says "WinZip Now") Please be sure that you have someone in mind who could help you if you have a problem when you install the WinZip software. If you can forward the compressed WinZip file over a LAN to the person you think might be able to help you, that person may prefer to uncompress the files and send you back the uncompressed files instead of installing WinZip on your system.
Please note that you may not be able to download or open files larger than 2 MegaBytes (2,048 KiloBytes). A few people will not be able to download files larger than 1 MegaByte (1,024 KiloBytes).
Often, systems people will be able to download the larger files sizes for you.
The larger file sizes are especially useful for the PDF format because you will be able to use full text search on all of the course materials.
Please click on the blue -zipped- hyperlink below to download animations and other course materials.
